The Women’s Psychotherapy Service Inc. was established in 1992 as a network of women therapists working in private practice in Brisbane.  It developed out of recognition of the need for a specific service for women, run by women, which focuses on the psychological needs of women.  The service is the sponsor for The Group for Women with Advanced Breast Cancer.

The service aims to assist women who are having difficulties in their relationships – with partners, children and others – or who are unhappy or dissatisfied within themselves.

Psychotherapy is a method of treatment that is helpful in understanding why we behave in certain ways or find it difficult to change. Psychotherapy can help us make sense of the past, and by showing us how past experiences continue to influence the present, it can help us understand current difficulties more fully. Psychotherapy is a means of understanding ourselves better, and as such, it can help with our relationships with others.

Psychotherapy is helpful for a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, difficulties in relationships, problems which keep recurring, or problems associated with trauma or loss.

The Women’s Psychotherapy Service Inc. offers a range of services including:

  • an initial consultation and assessment
  • short-term counselling and psychotherapy to focus on a specific problem
  • ongoing or intensive psychotherapy where the problem may be recurrent or has developed over many years
  • group psychotherapy
  • therapy with couples
  • supervision, training and consultation to other professionals and organisations.

The Women’s Psychotherapy Service Inc is not a free service, nor is it a funded service. Fees are charged on a sliding scale and are negotiated on an individual basis. Rebates for some fees are available through private health insurance. Rebates from Medicare are also available through the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.

Consultations are by appointment only. To make an appointment, or make further enquiries, contact us on

What can friends do to help?

Often people want to help, but don't know what would be helpful, or feel at a loss in the face of what seems overwhelming. Often people need help, but don't know how to ask. Below is a list of things that are helpful things to offer to do, or useful things to ask for when someone says "let me know if I can do anything to help"

Shopping.
Ironing
Mow the lawn
Make soups/casseroles
Walk the dog
Put on a load of washing
Etc.

Practical tasks are often the ones that take the effort, energy or time that someone who is having treatment doesn't have.
